Task 3 – Financial Industry and Market trends

Finance in the Games Industry

In the games industry finance plays a big part in the grand scheme of things. Games are given a budget of which to complete the game with, this budget is a general guideline of the quality of the product as the higher the budget the better people can be brought in to help with the game to make it higher quality. Games that receive lower budgets would most likely be smaller games from smaller teams of people. Budget is extremely Important in any industry as it should show an idea of the games quality. This does not always happen however, games created by big companies flop even when the budget is fairly large, Psychonauts is a game published by Majesco, this game did poorly as the sales were less then 100,000 initially. Even though this game was a commercial failure people still saw it as a great hidden gem. This games budget could of been used more effectively as its said that the main downfall of the development process was the marketing as there was little of it. This is an example of the budget not being used as effectively as it could of been. After being included in a collection of games called the Humble Bundle the game then went on to sell over 600,000 copies.

A current trend in the Games Industry is KickStarter/Crowd Funded Games, Many publishers have decided to take to the fans to help fund their game, an example of this is "Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night" and "Mighty No. 9". These games have been fully funded by fans of the devs/genres. Both of these games are made out to be similar genre to other games, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has the same Programmer of the popular game Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Koji Igarashi (the programmer) wanted to create a game for the fans as there has not been a game in this style (Metroidvania) in years. Might No. 9 Is being created by Veteran Megaman Devs in the style of old Mega Man games. Lots of games that are being Crowdfunded are games that relate to an old concept/genre as all of the examples of games are games that fans wanted but never gotten officially.

Other trends in the gaming industry is VR (Virtual Reality). Products and ideas have been around for a long time but recently with the Oculus Rift that was also Crowd Funded. Other companies saw the success and potential of such hardware and took their own shot of it. Another to partake in this trend is HTC with the HTC Vive. Players liked the idea of being fully immersed in a game world

Companies now new ways to use their budget on marketing, some companies will give Content Creators on large social platforms like Youtube. Companies would pay content creators to create reviews/gameplay videos/reaction or something related to the game to get the game out there to even more people.

A recent trend in the games industry is the survival game genre, lots of game developers have seen the potential of survival games and lots of different devs and publishers have had a go at creating a game using the survival formula. Some games that pioneered this game genre recently were Minecraft, DayZ Mod, Terraria and others that got very popular quick, each of these games are still very popular even today
